勢いでやって来たタイランド。いよいよ、コムローイ上げのイーペン祭り、当日。が、なんと、今年はかの有名なコムローイ一斉打ち上げが、開催されないらしいのだ。観光客向けの有料イベント($100)はあるのだけれど、随分前にチケット完売とのこと。そのことを当日知った僕らは、部屋で半日ほど、呆然としていた。コムローイ打ち上げ、見えないのかしら。いつも行き当たりばったりの僕らの旅、さすがに今回は行き当たりばったりすぎたかも。日暮れ前、ようやく気を取り直して宿を出る。中心部へ向かうと、僕らのヘコみ心をよそに、街はすごいことになっていた。民家もお寺も、至る所にろうそくの炎が並んでいる。21時に打ち上げ解禁なはずのコムローイが、すでに夕暮れ空にたくさん飛んでいる。人だかりの寺院に入ってみると、そこは超幻想的な世界だった。半端ないろうそくに囲まれて読経しているお坊さんたちは、ちょっと神々しい。この祭りはすごい。これは楽しい。21時を過ぎると、空のコムローイは一気に増えて、360度の空に上がりだした。僕らも川辺であげてみる。ヨメがあげたコムローイは、勢い良く上がって無数の光のひとつになっていく。超綺麗だけれど、どこか凛としていて、ホントいい夜だった。来て良かったと心底思えた。行き当たりばったりでも大丈夫だった。
DAY623 : LAUNCHING SKY LANTERNS AT YI PENG FESTIVAL
So here we are in Thailand and finally the launching day of sky lanterns at the Yi Peng Festival. However, since it was a sudden change of plans to come here, we didn't know that there is no public launching this year. Besides, all the tickets for private launching party for tourists($100) were sold out long time ago. We were so shocked and didn't know what to do inside our hotel room. Are we really missing the purpose of our trip to Thailand? We regretted our lack of plans and decided to go out before the dusk. As we walked towards the center, the town was surprisingly busy with all the candles alongside the streets at the temples, the residents and just everywhere else. We found the sky lanterns all over the sunset sky even before 9PM, the official launching time. It felt sacred as we walked inside the temple, there were monks chanting surrounded by the countless candles. Fantastic. So much fun. It was all over 360 degrees above us, filled with more and more flying lanterns in the sky. We bought one and flew by the river. It went up higher and higher and merged into the milky way of lanterns. It was such a beautiful, somehow dignified, and delightful moment. No plan but a good plan.
