国境越えは、ひと仕事。毎度のことではあるのだけれど、やっぱり無事通過できるか不安だし、国が変わった途端勝手が変わり、また物価や人々のクセの勉強し直しになる。国境を越えてすぐぐらいが、いちばんボラれやすい。ゲダレフの街を出て、車窓からの景色は劇的に変わっていく。いつのまにか砂漠地帯は終わり、少しずつ緑が現れる。サハラ沙漠が終わり、エチオピア高原へと差し掛かる。厳しいのか厳しくないのかよく分からない数回の荷物チェックを越えて国境をまたぐと、次は文化がガラリと変わった。あれだけ素っ気なかった女性たちが、薄着で闊歩しにこやかに握手をしてくれる。看板が見慣れてきたアラビア語からアムハラ語に変わり、 人々が進行するのはイスラムからエチオピア正教へと変わった。大変だけれど、この極端な変化を感じれるのは、国境越えの醍醐味だと思う。そしてバスを乗り継ぎ、標高2000mを越える高原の古都、ゴンダールに僕たちは到着した。
DAY 579 : ON OUR WAY TO ETHIOPIA
Crossing border is always tough. It's something we can never get used to after so many times. Different countries, different rules. We have to start over and adjust ourselves to their customs. Also the border cities are full of rip-offs. The landscape drastically changed right after we got out of Gedaref because it is the end of the Sahara dessert and we see more greenery ahead to Ethiopian Plateau. After several luggage checks and crossing the border, we were in a totally different culture. Women are more friendly and less covered. Street and shop signs are in Amharic, people believe not in Allah but in Ethiopian Christianity. Tough but the best part of crossing border is definitely in here, to be able to feel the radical change in people's culture. Followed by couple of buss transportations, we finally arrived at the ancient capital over 2000m above sea level, Gondar.
