「アフリカの屋根」トレッキングの旅、1日目。スーダンのエチオピア大使館に飾ってあった、一枚の写真。どこかの高い山の上に村があり、その場所より更に高い場所からその写真は撮られていた。へぇこんなとこがエチオピアにあるのか、と感心したのは1ヶ月前。その場所が「アフリカの屋根」なんて呼ばれる、ここゴンダール近くのシミエン国立公園だということを知り、思いがけずトレッキングツアーに参加することにした。4000m超えの山脈を3日間かけて歩くこのツアー。そんな高地にも2000年前から人が住み、そしてここは世界遺産なのだとか。不摂生と運動不足で肉々しい僕の体がどこまで頑張れるかちょっと心配だけれど、あの写真の場所には是非行きたい。初日のトレックは3時間。肩慣らしがてら、絶景の崖をウキウキ歩く。
DAY 583 : TRIP TO ROOF OF AFRICA, DAY 1
The first day of our trekking trip to Roof of Africa. It was a photo on the wall of Ethiopian Embassy in Sudan which I saw a month ago. There was a village on top of the very tall mountain and the photo was taken from even higher above. Later I found out that it was the Simien Mountains National Park near Gondar called "Roof of Africa" and decided to go on a 3-days, 4000m trekking tour. People have inhabited such a high-altitude area since 2000 years ago and the park is also one of the first World Heritage sites. I don't know how much my chubby lazy self-indulgent body can tolerate but I just got to be there. It was a three-hour trekking the first day, a nice walk along the cliffs with wonderful views.
