旅760日目 : トラムの下の地下貯水池
ローマ帝国時代から1600年もの間、都であり続けたイスタンブール。歴史が深くてホント困る。ネット上にたくさんあるトルコの歴史をなんども読み返しながら街を歩くのだけれど、情報が全然追いつかない。旧市街のそこら中に古そうな城壁やモスク、古い家に古い市場があるのだが、それらが一体何なのか分からないし、その数が多すぎる。なんか慣れてしまって最早素通りの勢いだ。ただただ、はるか昔の街の様子を想像しては感心し、途方にくれてカフェで休憩する毎日。遺跡好きのヨメも「見所が多すぎて困る」と嘆くほどに、トルコの史跡は途方もなく多い。さて、この通称「地下宮殿」は4~6世紀のローマ時代に作られたローマ時代の地下貯水池。すぐ上にはトラムが走り、オスマン帝国の宮殿や巨大なモスクがならんで、観光客が闊歩する。そんな場所の地下にこんなに大きくて古い水瓶があることに驚愕する。日本が弥生時代ぐらいの時から、街の人たちの水瓶になっていた場所だそうで、感心を通り越して疑いたくなってくる。そこへ水を運んだ水道橋もバッチリ残っていて、なぜこんなに古いものが未だ立派に建ってられるんだと不思議に思いつつ、その立派さにまた感心し、すぐ近くのカフェでチャイをすする。
DAY760 : UNDERGROUND RESERVOIR UNDERNEATH TRAM
Istanbul has been the capital for 1600 years since the Roman Empire. Their history is way too complicated to grasp just by going through some of the articles on the internet. Walking around in the old town, we often ran into some sort of historical sites like castle walls, mosques, houses and markets that we have no clue what they are. It didn't take too long to pay no attention and just walk through. We spent so much time just reminiscing about the city far back, being admired and a bit lost at coffee shops. Enough for my remains-fetish wife to say she was confused. The so-called "Underground Palace" is Roman ancient cisterns built in the 6th Century that lie right underneath a tram line which runs through very touristic area with an Osman Emperor palace remain and huge mosques. It blows my mind to imagine tons of tourists walking around right above such a gigantic cistern. It provided water since Japan was in the Yayoi Period. I was so amazed that I started to doubt. The aqueduct bridge which deliver water into the cistern still remains in good condition. With a little bit of suspicion and much admiration, we took a break at a nearby coffee shop.
