その街の治安ぐあいを図る、一つの目安として僕らが気にしているのは、塀の高さ。治安が悪いと言われる街ほど、塀は飾りではなく、敷居でもなく、侵入を防ぐものになっていき、最終的には電流が流れるワイヤーが張られるに至る。窓も同じで、およそ登れないであろう３階とかの窓にも鉄格子が嵌められるくらいになる。ここエジプトは、無防備さが素敵。テロ対策として、政府施設は警察と軍がガッチリガードしているものの、人々の家々は鍵をかけているのかすら怪しいほどだ。このタバコ店も同様で、頼んだ銘柄が無いからと他の店まで取りにいくのに、一介の旅人に店番を頼んでスタコラ行ってしまう。タイミング悪く、言葉も話せない日本人が店番をするワケわからないタバコ屋にお使いに来た少年が、眉を八の字にして困っていてもお構いなしで素敵だ。ここエジプトでも、モロッコでも感じた、地域の監視の目、みたいなものがうまく機能しているのかもしれない。あぁ平和だなぁ、とつくづく思う、ルクソールの夕暮れ。
DAY 556 : AT THE CIGAR STAND
It is very important for travelers to know law and order. One of the things I check to measure the security level in a city is the height of the fence and the wall.
