目指すのは湖の先、チズムル島。まず向かうは、首都リロングウェからマラウィ湖の港町、ンカタベイ。道中のバスの窓から見える景色はずっと田舎の風景なのだけれど、人や家が点々と、でもずっと見え続けていて、ちょっと面白い。アタマにカゴをのせる女性や、バスに叫ぶ子どもたち、農作業をする人々と畑。田舎なんだけども、誰もいないゾーンというのをあんまり見かけない。人口1600万人ほどのこの国、でも首都の人口は80万人ほど。農業国だからか、日本のように人口が都市部に集中していないようだ。国中にバラバラとみんな住んでいて、畑仕事をしているのかなぁと想像する。明治時代とかの日本も、こんな感じだったのかなぁ。首都は寂しい気もするけれど、国全体は賑わっているように思えてなんかいい。
We are heading to Chizumulu Island over the lake. The first destination is the Nkhata Bay of the Lake Malawi. The rural landscape from the bus window is quite entertaining. There are people and houses in every certain distance. Ladies with baskets over the heads, kids screaming at the bus and farmers at fields. Unlike Japan with the heavy populated urban cities, this agricultural country have less than five percent of its population outside the city, probably working at fields. I wonder if Japan was ever like here. Although the capital is kind of lonely, the country as a whole seems very lively.
