人口はいったい何人いるんだろうマレアレア。パッと見た感じで二,三百人というところか。山に囲まれた盆地のようなこの場所、山の麓辺りにあるマレアレアから向こう側の山まで見渡すことが出来、そのあいだには点々といくつもの村が見える。おそらく数千人程度の人が暮らしている。その景色を一望出来ることに、遠くの遠くの村まで丸見えなことに、なぜかちょっと暖かみというか安心感というか、そんなものを感じた。東京の夜景を見下ろしても、ああみんな暮らしているんだなぁと街の灯りひとつひとつを見ながら思ったりするのだけど、ここマレアレアではもっとみんなの暮らしが想像出来るというか、見えちゃうというか、うまく書けないけれど、とにかくチョットあったかい場所マレアレア。冬はたぶん、クソ寒いのだろうけど。
I wonder how many people live in Malealea, apparently around a couple of hundred? Malealea is a basin at the foot of mountains from where we can see the mountains on the other side and some villages in-between. Looking out the scenery and thinking there are several thousand of people living in far-off villages exposed to my glance, I felt warm and safe. When I look a night view in Tokyo, I feel the same way, thinking of the people living at the city lights. Here in Malealea, people's lives are even more clear and obvious that probably giving a warm atmosphere. Though I know it's damn cold in the winter time.
