旅767日目 : 夕暮れのエフェス遺跡
遺跡の中ではヨメの足が早くなる。普段の倍のスピードでズンズン歩き回り、石を愛で石に抱きつき、古代へと想いを馳せて、たまに踊る。そんな遺跡狂いのヨメに急かされて、イズミールから電車に乗って南へ1時間半ほどのセルチュクという街にある、"エフェス遺跡"に僕らは向かう。ちなみにトルコで一番ポピュラーなビールの名前もエフェス。きっとトルコの酒好きなおじさま方にも大切な遺跡なのだと思う。2015年に世界遺産登録されたこの遺跡は、紀元前10世紀にギリシア都市として造られ、その後ローマ、ビザンツ、オスマンと続き、15世紀ごろまで使われていたらしい。遺跡の内部は圧巻。世界三大図書館の一つとされた立派な建物や娼館、泉に大劇場と、いかに大きな都市だったかが窺いしれる。公衆トイレなんてものまで残っている。仕切りがなく、皆で並んで仲良く踏ん張ってた様子が想像できて面白い。そんな中をどこまでもヨメは歩き続け、僕らは最後の1組になるまで遺跡の中を廻っていた。そして、終電を逃して一泊する羽目になった。
DAY 767 : ANCIENT RUINS OF EPHESUS AT SUNSET
My wife gets excited and walk faster at ancient ruins. She walks around at almost double the regular speed, touch and hug the stones, and sometimes dance. We took a southward train from Izmir for an hour and a half to see the ancient ruins of Ephesus in the town called Selçuk. By the way, the most popular kind of beer is also named "Ephesus". I can see ithe ruins loved and respected by the local beer lovers. Declared a world heritage in 2015, the old town was built around the 10th BC in Greek and dominated by the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans until the 15th BC. There are remarkable ruins of the world's best 3 library, the house of prostitutes, the fountain, the amphitheater and even public restrooms with no walls between toilets. Within the vast area, we wondered around until we were the last visitors left for the day, ended up missing the last train and staying there for a night.
