となりの島から電波を拝借。インターネット事情があまり良くないアフリカ大陸、あるとこにはあるけれど、僕らには決して泊まれない高級ホテルだったり、あっても課金制だったり。なので僕らは、携帯電話を購入して、各国のsimカードを抜き差ししながら3G回線でネットをしている。それももちろん課金制で、お金ばかにならないのだけど、やっぱりネットはあると便利。ここチズムル島は、電気も水道もあるけれど、さすがにケータイのアンテナは立っていないようで、島の人々は隣のちょっと大きな島、リコマ島から電波をひろって使っている。ただ、その島と反対の場所は電波が全く届かなく、そこで裏側に住む人々は、リコマ島が見える畑まで出向いてネットや電話をしている。プリペイド携帯用のクレジット番号が書かれたカードがたくさん捨てられた畑に、何人もの島の人たちがケータイをいじって座っているその姿がちょっと面白い。
Stealing connection from the neighbor island. In Africa, internet connection is hard to get for us since it is at expensive hotels or not flat rate. We have to buy a mobile phone and switch SIM cards in each countries for the 3G network. Although it costs kind of a lot but still it is quite convenient. Here on the Chizumulu island, they have running water and electricity but no mobile connection. In order to get it, they have to go to the service area of the bigger neighbor island, Likoma. People on the other side however, have to move their butt to make a phone call or use internet. It is interesting to see quite few people and the pre-paid phone cards scattered on the fields.
