洗濯で芽生える友情。ホントにこの島の人たちは優しくて、愛想が良くて、人懐っこい。会話の中でこれだけ「ありがとう」を聞いた土地も他に無い気がする。宿の外を出れば、まず子どもが駆け寄ってきて、道ですれ違う人はみな、笑顔でどこいくの？と話しかけてくる。バックパックを宿まで運んでもらって、お金くれと言われなかったのも、2年ちょっとの旅のなかでこの島が初めて。本当に優しい人たちばかりなのだ。ヨメが湖で洗濯をしていると、そのぎこちなさを見かねてなのか、誰かが手伝ってくれたりする。若い彼女はでもさすが、なれた手つきで僕のズボンを洗ってくれる。そして、ヨメが宿から借りたバケツを持って、去っていった。そのあとヨメは怒られた。
Washing buddies. The local people here are very nice, kind and friendly. I get to hear "thank you" more than anywhere else. Kids are all over talking to us when we go outside the motel asking where we are going. I had never met anyone who brought our luggages without anything in return before. They are truly kind from the bottom of their hearts. Anonymous someone just come and help my wife for washing clothes probably because she looked terrible at it. It was a young girl who seemed very good at it. She skillfully washed my clothes and left with the bucket my wife borrowed from the motel. Not to mention, she pissed the motel owner.
