マセルから、マコトロンという街まで、山のあいだを東へ向かう。バスは6時発。アフリカの朝はとても早くて、バス停に行くまでもひと苦労。長距離バスにも関わらず席は早い者勝ちで、いっぱいになったからと言って締め切りというわけでなく、同じ値段を払って皆さん立ってでも乗る。本当に山の中の村で、一人二人と降りて行く。大きなカバンと、首都マセルで買ったと思われるトウモロコシ粉の袋や、野菜、生活用品などをバスから降ろして、向かえにきた家族と抱き合っていた。時期はクリスマスシーズンの少し前。中学生らしき制服を着た女の子が一人で乗っていて、電気も何もないところで降りて行った。
From Maseru to Mokhotlong, we took an 6AM bus and headed east driving through mountains. In Africa, people are active from very early morning. The fist-come-fist-served basis long distance bus is full with local africans who would pay even with no seats available. One by one, passengers got off in the mountain villages. Many of them were with huge bags full of corn powder, vegetables or daily goods from Maseru and giving hugs to each other with their family at the stop. It was right before the Christmas season. A girl in a junior high school uniform got off in the middle of nowhere and disappeared into darkness alone.
