ソト族の王国レソト。首都マセルではさすがに見かけないけれど、田舎に行けば毛布のような布をまとってヒツジを追いかけている、他の南部アフリカでは見られない姿に出会うことが出来る。一概に黒人さんと言っても、その顔は部族によって随分違い、背が高い人盛れば、僕より小さい人もいて安心したりする。その王国の国旗も、車のナンバーにも、お土産にもなっているのがこのバソトハット。三角の麦わら帽子のテッペンにもやもやとした飾りをつけたこの帽子がこの国の象徴のひとつらしく、結構しっかりとした作りをしていて、チョット重い。国の象徴っぽく扱われているこの帽子、レソト国内を旅している途中かぶっているひとを一人もみなかった。観光産業ってこんなもん。
The kingdom Lesotho of the Sotho. Not often seen in the city but in the rural area there are people dressed in a single cloth running after a flock of sheep which is a quite rare scenery in other south African areas. As for the black africans, their facial figure is distinct between tribes. There are the tall ones and the short ones, some even shorter than me. The Basotho hat, frequently used symbol for the national frag, the number plate of automobiles or souvenirs, is a traditional Lesotho hat with an ornament on the tip. It is a well crafted triangle straw hat with a decent weight. Although the hat is almost symbolic for Lesotho, we never encountered anyone wearing it. That is how tourism is.
